Adkins was brought up by a single mother in different working-class areas of London. As a young girl she was a fan of modern pop music and learning to play the guitar as well as the clarinet. It wasn't until her teens, when she began to discover the blues-based rhythm singer Etta James and other mid-20th century artists, that she began to consider pursuing a career in music. She was studying at an elementary school for performing and visual arts that was funded by the federal government. A friend uploaded songs Adkins composed on Myspace. Her music eventually attracted the attention of record companies, and in 2006, shortly after her graduation she signed a deal with XL Recordings.
